Meet your baker

Henry Hunter, Columbia baker

I'm Henry Hunter, a Columbia baker, teacher, and author who believes great bread should be both approachable and a little bit sacred. After years of baking, writing, and teaching people to make real bread at home, I started Henry's Bread Kitchen to share naturally leavened loaves with my own community.

Every loaf is slow-fermented, shaped by hand, and made in small batches. I use simple ingredients and time—no shortcuts—so each bake has real flavor and character.

What I love most is seeing the same faces come back week after week for bread that feels like it was made just for them.

"After 26 years in advertising and marketing, I finally made something I didn't have to spin."

Why customers come back

  • Every loaf is made by hand, by me. Never par-baked, never outsourced.
  • Slow-fermented over two days, the way real bread is meant to be made.
  • Real ingredients only. No dough conditioners, no preservatives, no shortcuts.
  • Baked fresh for market day, never pulled from a freezer.
  • Every loaf is labeled with its ingredients and allergens, so you always know what you're getting.
  • Baked in my own kitchen under South Carolina cottage food law.
  • My regulars come back week after week. The bread earns it.
